THE KINDNESS OF RAIN – GAIA HOLMES’ POETRY, By Simon Zonenblick

One of the best poetry events I have recently attended was at Nelson’s Winebar, Hebden Bridge, where Luddenden-born poet Gaia Holmes read from her 2013 collection Lifting the Piano With One Hand, complete with props such as a china tea cup.  The high point of an evening of high quality performance poetry, this rather surreal set-up was the backdrop to a stunning suite of poems touching on the struggle for the individual’s struggle for identity, the judgements of others, and the desire to escape life’s problems while forgetting the sound /of occasional china  / rattling in trembling hands.   The poems, by turns contemplative and very funny, resonate with this search for security, for a life where emotional salvation is no longer a chore.
